Erich P. Horn, MD, MBA is a board-certified ophthalmologist, educator and entrepreneur whose private practice (East Bay Eye Specialists) is in Oakland, California. Specializing in advanced technology cataract surgery, glaucoma care, ocular trauma reconstruction and eye diseases of aging, he’s practiced clinical ophthalmology for 17 years. He currently is Vice-Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, where he also serves as Chief of Comprehensive Ophthalmology. In this role, he teaches residents, fellows and medical students in the classroom and in the operating room and has been the recipient of teaching awards several times. He is active in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, chairs the Practicing Ophthalmologists’ Committee in his specialty and teaching fellow ophthalmologists annually at the Maintenance of Certification Review Course in Chicago. He has been honored by the Academy with the Secretariat Award and the Achievement Award. He serves on the Board of Directors of the non-profit Pacific Vision Foundation and Prevent Blindness Northern California, both headquartered in San Francisco.

Dr. Horn earned his MD with honors from Harvard Medical School in 1995, following a Howard Hughes Medical Institute/NIH research fellowship.  He was awarded a bachelor’s degree in History from Brown University, magna cum laude. He earned an executive MBA from Wharton in 2009, and led a team to a third place finish in the Wharton Business Plan Competition that year.

Sharon L. Jick, M.D.

Dr. Jick received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English cum laude from Yale University and earned her medical degree from the University of California, San Diego. She completed her internship and residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. Currently, she is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Washington University.

Dr. Jick is active within the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Currently, she serves as editor of the Lens and Cataract section of the Academy’s Basic and Clinical Science Course. She is also vice chairman of the committee which assists comprehensive ophthalmologist to maintain their board certification.

Additional professional affiliations include the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Missouri State Medical Association and the St. Louis Ophthalmological Society.

Susan M. Pepin, M.D., M.P.H.

University of Arizona College of Medicine, Phoenix, AZ


Susan Pepin is a nationally recognized medical educator, clinician, and researcher. She has fellowships in pediatric and neuro-ophthalmology, working with Simmonds Lessell at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.  She has nearly 20 years of experience in the clinical setting.  She also held critical roles in teaching medial students and residents.  Dr. Pepin joined Piper Trust as president and CEO in July 2014. Prior to joining the Trust, she served as associate dean for diversity and inclusion and associate professor of surgery and pediatrics at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth; she is known for diversifying the medical school’s student body and is a leader in the field of neuro-ophthalmology. She is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix.  She serves on the board of the Health Futures Council at ASU (Arizona State University) and is a member of the Center for the Future of Arizona Advisory Council and Greater Phoenix Leadership. Dr. Pepin holds a BA from Yale University; a BA and MA from University of Oxford; a MD from University of California, San Francisco; and a Master of Public Health from Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice. She is a 1987 Rhodes Scholar.
